My 2nd grade class is doing an Ohio Animal Project. My animal is the porcupine. Below are some of the things I have learned about them.
BODY
Porcupines are plump rodents with brown and black fur. Their sharp spines are called quills. They cannot shoot their quills as once thought. They are medium sized. They can get up to eighteen pounds.
HABITATS
Porcupines live in deserts, grasslands, hollow logs, forests and holes. Porcupines around the world can look different. For example, porcupines in Italy are black and porcupines in North America are brown.
DIET
Porcupines are herbivores. They eat leaves, berries, twigs, tree bark, grass, flowers, roots and fruit. They grunt when looking for food.
PREDATORS
Porcupines don't get eaten very often because of their sharp quills. Predators often try to attack the face where there are no quills. The porcupine's predators are coyotes, foxes, bears, dogs, people and great horned owls.
FUN FACTS
- Porcupines have orange teeth.
- There are white bands on their quills.
- Porcupines eat one pound of food daily.
